Inside Line Promotions – QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (June 18, 2019) – Joshua Shipley grabbed his second win of the season with the San Tan Ford ASCS Desert Sprint Car Series last Saturday at Arizona Speedway. That performance also propelled him into the points lead for the series.
“I started second in my heat race and immediately got to the lead,” he said. “We were able to walk away with the heat win, which felt pretty good. The track was only one lane, but it was really fast.”
Shipley was the third qualifier and he drew the No. 3 for the A Main. He got to second right at the start, but the flagman ended up calling it back. Following the complete restart, Shipley maintained the third position and watched the other cars run the bottom.
“I could tell the bottom was going to go away eventually,” he said. “There was a big cushion up on the wall, but no one was running it. I knew that the only way I’d have a chance to gain positions was to give it a run up there.”
Shipley stayed at the top and was still in third position when Lap 12 featured three cautions. Under yellow, Shipley could see the bottom had gone away and knew he’d need to take the top on the restart.
“I took second place off turn two and took the lead off turn four,” he said. “The car was hooked up, the engine was running well and I felt like I made the right choices all race long. I knew the track would eventually come to me and it did.”
With that win, Shipley earned the points lead over his brother, Kyle.
The next race for the series is July 6 at USA Raceway in Tucson, Ariz.
